The new WiMAX standard known as IEEE 802.16e was ratified by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
Finalizing the standard should help encourage new development and adoption. With the standard now in place, carriers can be sure that equipment from different suppliers will interoperate.
Intel and Motorola have already announced plans to collaberate in order to speed up adoption of the new standard.
Paul Sergeant, director of marketing for WiMax at Motorola, has predicted that WiMax applications that provide broadband connectivity directly to residential customers will be available in the U.S. in 2006.
PDAs and smart phones will use the standard technology in 2007, and the 802.16e chipsets will manufactured in large volumes by 2008 and 2009.
